Interesting Places to Visit in Spain

Spain is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. And with good reason – the country offers historic towns and cities, beautiful beaches and countryside, a unique culture and superb food and wine.

Madrid is one of Europe ’s most beautiful and stylish capitals - a city of wide avenues, parks and impressive public buildings. Highlights include the Royal Palace and the Prado Museum , one of the world’s greatest museums. The Prado has extensive collections by the three major Spanish painters – El Greco, Velasquez and Goya – among its estimated 7,000 works of art.

Spain ’s second city, Barcelona is a thriving seaport as well as a sophisticated and lively city. No visitor should miss the spectacular cathedral designed by the architect Gaudi, the Sagrada Familia – a work in progress since 1882. Other highlights include the historic Gothic Quarter, delightful Art Nouveau architecture and a stroll along the city’s famous pedestrian street, Las Ramblas.

Many people consider Seville to be Spain ’s most beautiful city. Apart from being the home of flamenco dancing, gypsies and castanets, Seville also boasts the world’s largest Gothic church, excellent shopping in and around its shaded squares and a renowned opera house.

One of Spain ’s biggest attractions is in nearby Granada . The Alhambra dates from the 11 th century, a legacy of Muslim rule in Spain and is a maze of beautiful gardens, palaces and courtyards. Some of Spain ’s other historic cities include Toledo , Cordoba and Jerez , home to many famous sherry houses.
