A secluded beach on the Costa Brava in Catalonia

Whilst part of the Costa Brava coastline leant itself to tourist developments on a very large scale other parts have retained a more traditional look and have become "hidden gems" for visitors who want a little more than sun, sand and sangria. Small towns like:

L'Escala

L'Escala has always earned its living from the sea. Once the most important fishing port in the region the town is built on a promontory which juts out into to sea forming a delightful sheltered bay ideal for mooring a traditional Mediterranean fishing fleet. There a several kilo metres of beach running to the west at east of the town as welt as the rocky coves so typical of the L'Escala area.

L'Escala is a relatively small working town and with or 10 hotels serving the tourist industry, it offers a gentle slower pace of life to its residents.

Pals

At Ptatja de Pals, the cliffs of Costa Brava (The Rugged Coast) take a break and the coastline becomes a wide, white sandy beach that runs to LEstartit, a popular resort with a large marina, excellent beaches and nightlife to match.

The town has many excellent seafood restaurants which hint at the still thriving local fishing industry, white Pats signature watchtower lends the town an aura of medieval antiquity. Much of Pats recent popularity can be attributed to the stunning views of the challenging local Golf course, the huge variety of water sports available and the unspoilt natural beauty of the region.See hotels Pals

The main attractions of Pals are its 14th century ruins, thick inland pine forests, and the vast sweeping sandy bay of Ptatja de Pals, from where Christopher Columbus is said to have set sail for the Americas.

Platja d'Aro

Platja d'Aro is a lively beach resort set at the mouth of a singularly beautiful river valley. There are many good shops and several excellent seafood restaurants all of which offer great value.

Platja d'Aro has a 2km long stretch of well-serviced golden sandy beach, making it a superb water sports venue. The town is also ideally located for day tripping, perhaps to Patafrugell's large, lively market or even to beautiful Barcelona, which can be reached by bus in less than 2 hours. Just inland from Ptatja d'Aro are the foothills of the Gavarres range - ideal for hiking, walking and horse-riding and host to spectacular views in every direction. See hotels Platja d'Aro
